Welcome to the Cornish Leaf and Coil 4x4 Offroading Club.
We have given below some information on how we came about and what we do. Please use the tabs on the left to view further information on the club. If you have any additional queries, please contact us for further information.
We hope you find this website informative and look forward to seeing you at one of our meetings.
The Cornish Leaf & Coil Club started in August 1999 when a group of off-roaders got together in a pub after a green lane run. A few of the group were members of other off-road clubs, but these tended to be vehicle or marque specific. The group wanted a club for any 4x4 road vehicle so started their own. The name came about after much discussion and medicinal ale as they wanted the name to include any vehicle, and so it refers to coil and leaf springs (vehicles with air suspension or torsion bars are also welcome!).
The Club has always had monthly off-road events, which in the early years were mainly green lane runs, these sometimes finishing on a bit of rough ground somewhere. As the numbers grew, so the logistics of organising green lane runs became more of a problem so private sites were located to cater for the larger numbers.
The format for events is that we have six challenge events (bi-monthly) throughout the year, which involve having a punch card cable-tied to your vehicle and the object is to travel around the site locating the 'punches' and punching the card in the right place. It might sound easy but you haven't seen where we put the punches! There are different difficulties of punches for winched and non-winched vehicles, to keep things fair. Each punch is worth a certain amount of points, which are accumulated throughout the year towards the 'Challenge Series'. At the end of the year, trophies are presented to the members who accumulate the most points in their respective class.
Once a year the summer challenge is sponsored to raise money for local charities. Over the years the club has given thousands of pounds to the Pirate Trust, along with large donations to the RNLI, Redruth Cubs, Shelterbox and individuals in need.
In between the challenge days (the other 6 months) we have driving days, which take the form of driving off-road around a course marked out by canes. This is ideal for beginners still learning the ins & outs of off-roading. We try and make any really challenging bits optional to cater for mixed abilities and we say to any member, if you are worried about any of the driving, you don't have to do it. We don't want anyone over extending either their ability or their vehicle. Driving starts around 11.00am, with the course being reversed around 1.00pm which usually creates interest, especially on the climbs. We start packing up the course around 4pm and help with this is appreciated.
